UNDERSTANDING MS

WHAT IS MULTIPLE SCLEROSIS (MS)?

Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is a chronic autoimmune disorder affecting the body’s central nervous system (CNS), comprising the brain, spinal cord, and optic nerves. Nerve cells in these parts are covered by myelin sheath, a layer that protects the nerves and helps them send signals from the brain to the rest of the body.

What's Multiple Sclerosis (MS)

In MS, our immune system attacks the myelin sheath, causing the nerves to become exposed, due to which nerves are unable to transmit signals properly. The damage can slow or block the electrical signals that carry information between the central nervous system and the rest of the body- causing problems with vision, movement, muscle strength, coordination and thinking.`

Globally,
1 in 3,000 people
(approximately 2.9 million)
are living with MS.

In India, the occurrence is
relatively low- approximately
1.5 lakh people
(11 in every one lakh people)
are suffering from this
debilitating condition.
